Managing Your Weight

Why is it important to manage your weight?

There are many reasons why you might consider managing your weight. It is great to feed your body the nutrients it needs so you can feel energetic, strong and a sense of well being. It is also good to reduce your risk of health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers. Feeding your body a balance of nutritious foods also improves mental health outcomes and enhances liver health

What if you have tried managing your weight before?

It is easy to be swept up by the ‘promise’ of weight loss if you ‘follow the diet’. In the initial stages a ‘diet’ can seem like the answer to your problems. You have no doubt tried a weight loss diet before, or been seriously promising yourself that you ‘must’ do that soon. Part of you may be putting off the day that you ‘start the diet’ as you think it will be ‘hard’.Weight management is much more than ‘going on a diet’.

Why should I see a dietitian?

Are you confused about what to eat?

Are you struggling with what else to do about your weight if you don’t ‘go on a diet’?

Weight management is much more than just knowing what to eat less, or what to avoid. In fact, recent research suggests that focusing entirely on what you ‘can’t eat’ may in fact make it harder to achieve your goals. At Wahroonga Dietitians, we will work alongside you to identify what has worked in the past and we will examine a range of things we could try moving forward. Our advice is based on evidence from large-scale clinical trials of what ’works’ and what does not help.

Jennifer and Sue would love to help you in the following ways:

  • Learn how to manage your weight over the long term
  • Learn how to manage your shape without focussing entirely on the scales
  • Learn how to improve your health parameters (such as blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and blood lipids including cholesterol and triglycerides) even if your weight stays at a similar number
  • Learn how to improve your energy levels, so you feel that have enough energy to enjoy some exercise

In particular, at Wahroonga Dietitian we will:

  • Explore factors that drive your food choices
  • Help you to think about hunger and satiety, and which food choices might be more helpful
  • Teach you how to tune into your cues for eating
  • Help you to fine-tune your food choices
  • Help you feel more confident about how to manage your eating patterns
  • Teach you how to manage your food and eating, so you do not have to repeatedly ‘go on a diet’
  • Improve your relationship with food
  • Teach you how to enjoy a wider variety of food without feeling guilty

Recommendations to you will be based on your current personal situation and lifestyle. Make an appointment now to come and talk to Jennifer and Sue at Wahroonga Dietitians.
